Maria Mitchel 1847

“COMET 1847 VI”, is tribute to María Mitchell (1818-1889), the third woman to discover a comet, and the first to discover it with a telescope.

Mitchell liked to spend her nights on the roof of her family’s house, scrutinizing the sky and the stars.

On October 1, 1847, she was studying a segment of the sky that she already knew, and in that moment saw a spot that was not there before, thus discovering the comet that is now called Miss Mitchell’s Comet (Comet 1847 VI).
